One year after the introduction of the Ducati 996R, the era of the 998 series began in 2002. Divided into the model variants 998, 998S and 998R, Testastretta engines worked in 3 stages in the Superbikes. In the S variant, the engine from the 996R was used unchanged. The performance of the Standard 998 was reduced to 123 HP by means of different timing and a lower valve lift. Despite the underperformance, the 998 engine was fully convincing at the time. It developed its power extremely evenly and did not diminish even at high speeds.
