Ducati replaced the 888 with the 916 in 1994. The constant development of the 916 series enabled Ducati to continue its longstanding dominance in the Superbike World Championship.
The motorcycle caused a sensation at the time due to the spectacular design by Massimo Tamburini and Sergio Robbiano and innovative technical solutions. It was one of the first standard motorcycles with exhaust silencers under the seat. This design feature, later adopted by many manufacturers, had more than just aerodynamic reasons for the 916. In combination with the space-saving single-sided swing arm, it made it possible to design the exhaust manifolds in a performance-enhancing manner.
Former Bimota co-owner Tamburini worked on the 916 project at Cagiva for six years before the first 916 models went into production at Cagiva in Varese. Until spring 1995 the 916 was completely manufactured at Ducati in Borgo Panigale. The frame of the 916 was completely redeveloped, for the engine Ducati used a further development of the 888 engine. The crankshaft was new with a stroke of two millimeters. The inlet valves with 33 millimeters and the outlet valves with 29 millimeters remained the same size. The cylinder heads were new developments with a lower height to give more space to the front wheel, especially with a shorter wake. The wake could be adjusted between 97 and 91 millimeters. This was achieved using a steering shaft tube that could be rotated vertically by 180 degrees.
